Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple

Kwan Im Thong
Hood Cho Temple

178 Waterloo Street, Singapore 187964

Dear Readers,

Happy New Year to you all and may year 2010 be a better year in whatever you do... Although my rate of readers are really pathetic, 1 hand can count but I am still satisfied as 3 folllowers of my blog are better than none...

I don't know about you all but for me year 2009 is not a really good year for me.. don't wish to elaborate as never wash my dirty linen in public lor.. Finally year 2010 has come and like every year , I went down to the Goodness Of Mercy aka Guan Yin temple at Waterloo st to pray and at the same time ask for my overall for year 2010.. Just a short note to all those who do not know where is this temple.. this temple is very famous, Hongkong have it's own Wong Tai Sin temple, Thailand had it's own four face buddha, Malaysia had it's own very famous Perak Cave (Pi Li Tong) and Guan Yin temple in penang. And Singapore , she had this Guan Yin temple to be proud of.. a little history for all who is curious ..

The Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple was built in 1884 on a 500 square metre plot of
land along Waterloo Street. It has expanded over the years as a result of several renovations
and extensions to its premises.
The main objective of the temple was to provide a place of worship primarily of
Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, for the migrant Chinese population in Singapore.
When Singapore was bombed by the invading Japanese air force during World War
II, the Temple was spared, despite the near-total destruction of many adjacent buildings.
During this period the Temple provided refuge for the sick, the wounded and the homeless.
In 1983, the Temple was rebuilt and enlarged to its present day size and in 2001 it
was marked as a historic site.

Ask any auntie in singapore on where is this temple and they will tell u straight.. it is famous because it had been said that this temple is known for people to receive good luck after worshiping at the temple, thus making it a popular temple to visit. Most devotees visit the temple on the first or fifteenth day of Chinese New Year. The temple is well known for its divination activity. Qian or divining sticks which are wooden sticks with writing on it, are placed in a brass can and shaken. These cans have been resounding in the temple since 1884. When such sticks fallout, they are interpreted to tell one's future. In 1990, the temple was the first in Singapore to provide divination slips in English for English-educated devotees and visitors.

Like every year without fail, I also involve myself in the divination sticks aka qiu qian.. The divination in this temple is very very spot on and whenever I have issues that I can't think of a solution or need to ask for a guide , the divination stick that come out are always spot on.. many famous hongkong & local artist are known to visit this temple every now and then.. I got myself stick 23 and exchange for the pink slip of paper as shown above in the photo. It actually say that I have finally reached the gate of heaven and an old friend will let me in though the well guarded gate... it simple means good luck in year 2010 for me and everything will be smooth for me... I heave a sigh of relief when I saw this.. finally after so many years of not so good year, I finally have a better year to look forward to.. You might describe me as superstition but I really believe that when you have a religion , you have faith in the things you do...

Whether this stick 23 remains to be truth or not , it will have to wait until end of year 2010 where I will recall ... for now I am more than happy to kick start the year 2010.. If you all ever drop by singapore , do pay a visit to this temple and if you have issues or problem which you wanna ask, do take up the divination stick.. Qiu Qian..

ps : never ask for strike of lottery or 4D ....
